[Film News] Afterschool Memoir: Roc Stea’D
Last week, Soblu had the pleasure of sitting down with Detroit’s latest Pop duo, “Roc Stea’D.” The group is managed by LIVE The Music Group, an independent label out of Michigan. The group recently released their highly anticipated and well received mixtape, “No Red Lights,” hosted by Atlanta’s, DJ Greg Street. The group has been coined the 2012 TLC due to their individual style and racy messages, high energy performances and rap and hip hop sound. They have been receiving coverage in some of the industry’s leading publications and online sites. Currently, they are on a national radio tour promoting their first single, “Stack Big Faces.”
Here is what Roc Stea’D had to say about their “afterschool” experiences:
Soblu: What school did you go to? Where is it located?
Brittany (Roc Stea’D): Hey there! I went to Southfield High my freshman and sophomore year, and finished out at Southfield Lathrup in Michigan.
Soblu: Did you have plans mapped out for what you were going to do after school, prior to graduating?
Brittany (Roc Stea’D): Initially my plans were to go to school in California, either USC or Pepperdine University. Unfortunately my family didn’t have the money to send me, in addition to the fact that I graduated high school early my mom didn’t feel so comfortable with a 16 year old talking about going across the country alone (laughs). I had scholarships from other schools, but my heart wasn’t in it if i couldn’t pursue my dreams at the same time, so my mom told me I had 1 year to figure things out.
Soblu: Some say your early 20s are some of the most difficult years because you are still trying to find yourself and come into adulthood, while figuring out what you are going to do for the rest of your life. Do you find that to be true? What’s your take?
I absolutely find that to be true. It’s the brink of adulthood and making the decisions to start the journey of where your life will go, so it can be very intimidating, but the beautiful thing is you’re never alone, everyone has been through it before. Thank God I was blessed with amazing parents that were always so supportive of me and held my hand through every step. It’s okay to not know it all, that is part of life, lean on the people who love you and they will help you through it.
Soblu: Is there anything you wish you knew prior to graduating from school that you know now?
Brittany (Roc Stea’D): One thing I wished I knew prior to graduating is that you have time!!! Take things at your own pace and follow your heart, some people go to bigger universities, some people stay at home and commute, and some people don’t even go to college at all. None of those options are wrong; you have to do what works best for you. Don’t follow what everyone else is doing because it seems right, really think it out, use your resources, talk to your counselors, advisors, educate yourself on grants and loans, tell your parents how you feel, and most importantly be honest with yourself! Failure to do so could result in a lot of wasted time and money, and even worse make you unhappy in the end. Stay true to yourself and take all the steps to be the best you, you can be!
Soblu: What school did you go to? Where is it located?
Jessica (Roc Stea’D): I went to Southfield High School in Michigan… GO BLUEJAYS!
Soblu: What are some of your memorable senior year moments?
Jessica (Roc Stea’D): I was very active in high school. I participated in nearly everything: theatre, pom-pom and many other after school programs. My most memorable moments in high school were simply being involved. I enjoyed balancing a busy schedule and meeting new friends.
Soblu: What was your first job out of college?
Jessica (Roc Stea’D): My first job after school was of course teaching dance! It was the only job I could handle with my schedule; the hours aren’t too heavy and I genuinely enjoyed it!
Soblu: Is there anything you wish you knew prior to graduating from school that you know now?
Jessica (Roc Stea’D): I wish I was a little more familiar with the college curriculum prior to graduation. College can be very intimidating if you’re not familiar with the set up! It is very important to take advantage of any programs your high school offers or talk to someone you trust to get all the information you need so you can make a plan for yourself! Better to be prepared then caught by surprise! :-)
